After poring over thousands of quilt images, 25 expert panelists submitted a first round of ballots. The result: 1,720 quilts spanning the past 100 years were nominated for consideration. Through successive rounds of balloting, the list was honed until, finally, only 100 remained.
Seven quilts received nearly unanimous endorsements and were immediately included. The others were selected from quarter-century time periods. Perhaps the greatest challenge to the panel came in narrowing the selection of quilts made during the last quarter-century. The resurgence of interest in quiltmaking has seen the creation of many thousands of extraordinary works, making the panel's decisions extremely difficult.
But the work was far from over. Now began the challenge of tracking down these 100 quilts. Members of the four nominating organizations acted as detectives for the cause. Some of the quilts from the earlier part of the century had been passed down through several generations, and their current whereabouts were unknown. Finding them took some clever sleuthing!
As many as possible of the quilts were displayed in a special exhibit at the 1999 International Quilt Festival in Houston. In addition, Primedia Special Interest Publications, publisher of QNM, Quiltmaker, and McCall's Quilting, has documented the collection in a special edition exhibit catalog/anthology called "The Twentieth Century's Best American Quilts".
