I'm a long-time elementary school librarian. I live on a mountain farm on the border of Tennessee/Virginia and have done all the traditional farm stuff as well as traveling to town to work. My mother and grandmother were quilters, and I recently quilted a friendship quilt of signed blocks made for my great-grandmother in the 1920's. I own a totally handmade (sheep to quilt!) wool, hand-spun, hand-woven, hand-dyed, hand quilted whole-cloth quilt made by my great-great-grandmother about 1860. I started my first quilt when I was 18. Most of my quilts are made for gifts, but I did have my Peaceable Kingdom red and green medallion quilt hung in the Paducah show in 1992. I usually machine piece (although I hand pieced a kingsize Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt for my sister) and hand applique and hand quilt. I've machine appliqued and machine quilted, but I don't really like the finished product, and my very favorite part of the quilt process is hand quilting! I finally had an operation for carpal tunnel syndrome in my right wrist 4 years ago when it interfered with my quilting! Hope to be able to do this another 20 years, anyway.
